POLICE officers must uphold the constitution and carry out their duties according to the law, their staff association leader says.
The Police Association of Papua New Guinea also called on its members to exercise caution and abide by the rule of law.
Association president Lowa Tambua said: “I appeal to all police personnel to remain calm and to defend our constitution and our judiciary without bias or favour.
“I also appeal to all police officers to remain neutral and never take sides in this crisis.”
He assured the public that association members were united and were working together to protect citizens and provide them security.
“I want to put on record that the police force is intact and there is command and control,” Tambua said.
Tom Kulunga, who up until this week was police commissioner, urged political leaders, police officers and people to exercise common sense in light of the recent political developments.
“I call upon members of the RPNGC in particular to be neutral, uphold the rule of law and remain focused on protecting and serving the people of Papua New Guinea,’’ he said.
“We must continue to do our duties as required without fear or favour.
“Senior officers as well as the rank and file of the RPNGC are intact and committed to protecting and serving the people of PNG. We will ensure that there is peace, law and order.”
He also warned people who want to take advantage of the situation to think twice as the law will come down hard on them.
