POLICE nationwide were out in numbers manning checkpoints and conducting crime-prevention patrol rounds to step up security operations for Christmas and the New Year holidays.
National Capital District (NCD) policemen and officers set up road blocks at three different locations to inspect vehicles and to ensure motorists were sober.
They were also on the lookout for drivers, especially Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs), who overload their vehicles with passengers.
NCD Metropolitan Supt Perou N’dranou said the policemen were tasked to work on three shifts, from 7am to 3pm, 3pm to 11pm and 11pm to 7am, and in rotation to sure higher police presence in the city.
He said the policemen and officers from the three zones and from the specialist sections that include the traffic, prosecutions, criminal investigation division, community policing, dog unit, Special Services Division, were also deployed in the security operations.
Zone 2 commander Chief Insp Joel Hamago said the check points had raised awareness, influencing people to refrain from drink-driving.
“This is reflected by no reports of fatal accidents on Christmas Eve and Day. This is a good sign and we hope all will remain well for the New Year,” he added.
Motorist James Saihengu said: “I drive around the city during festive periods. Comparing with the past, I feel the police are doing a good job this year. The road blocks are set up at certain crime hotspots like Erima. The public now fell safe to travel because of the high police presence.”
The police operations end in January.
