AS of today, vendors in Port Moresby will be arrested for selling their items at traffic lights and road junctions.
Metropolitan Commander Perou N’Dranou yesterday said there will be no more selling of newspapers, or other items and no more begging at these places along the city roads.
“It is dangerous for them to be there,” he said.
“They can get hit by a speeding vehicle.
“They will be arrested by the police if they are doing these activities as it is violating traffic rules.”
He said the vendors can be fined K5000 to K10,000 if they continue to trade in prohibited places.
“I urge the public not to stop and buy these newspapers and other items from these street vendors on the roads,” N’Dranou said.
“Also beggars must stop begging on these busy roads as it is also violating traffic offenses”.
N’Dranou said that because of the nation’s economic crisis he has stopped police from escorting caskets and sports motorcades.
He said police have stopped assisting with the towing of vehicles that break down on the road.
“Escorting motorcades and towing broken-down cars was our public services and was free of charge,” N’Dranou said.
