Police putting family unit under its care

WORK is in progress for the Family and Sexual Violence Unit to become a directorate of the PNG Royal Constabulary, says deputy police commissioner operations Jim Andrews
“PNGRC needs to start funding if we are serious about addressing family and sexual violence,” Andrews told a law and justice stakeholders meeting.
He said the work of the FSV unit, which was established in 2009, had been funded by the Australian Federal Police and donor agencies.
“The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary does not have a structure for the FSV unit. If there is no structure then obviously there will be no visible progressive career path for the members. This may cause the members to apply for transfer out and they will take with them the skills, knowledge and experience,” Andrews said.
“To address these challenges that we have highlighted, the commissioner intends to change FSVU into a fully-fledged directorate within the Crimes Division of the Royal PNG Constabulary structure.”
