PEOPLE from the Highlands living in Daru contributed K500 and presented it to South Fly police commander Supt Brian Kombe to stop intimidation from the people of Bamu in retaliation over the death a man from their village who was killed in Port Moresby for 20toea just over a week ago.
Supt Kombe said he had warned people living in Daru to stop that practice because the Highlanders living and working there were innocent and did not know what had happened.
He said they should stop intimidating the people and stop the regionalism attitude.
“Most of the people living and working in the South Fly area are from outside the province and they must try to respect them,” he said.
“If you use an incident from the outside and tell people to contribute money to solve that issue in a different place then you can be arrested and charged for extortion.”
Supt Kombe said such practice should stop because it would set precedence.
He said he had warned people living within his command of South Fly to stop that practice of demanding money from a certain group of people if a man or woman was killed by someone from a different province.
Supt Kombe said this was the second time people living in Daru town had demanded money from Highlanders. He said he had warned the people that if they did that again, they would face the full force of the law.
He said in another incident, the suspect who was arrested for assaulting Customs officers last week had been released on a K300 police bail because he had been charged with assault.
