Police reject compensation offer

POLICE in Enga have rejected an offer of compensation from a man who allegedly attacked a police officer last month.
And provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Joseph Tondop is urging community leaders at Palipaka in Paiyam town, Porgera, to hand over the man to police.
“I am appealing to the leaders to hand over the man who attacked a police officer,” he said.
“We have laws and every citizen must know how to resolve issues amicably.”
Tondop said the man had written to the police offering to pay compensation.
“The compensation is accepted but he has to go through the criminal justice system of PNG. I am happy that he confessed but that is not enough,” Tondop said.
“To completely set yourself free in accordance with Bible teachings, you must surrender and say sorry. Allow the court process to determine your case and issue punishment in accordance with the law – compensation inclusive. This is the best advice I can give. You can run but you will not hide forever. The law will catch up with wherever you are.”
Tondop said community leaders must change the way they solve problems.
According to police, it was the second attack on a police officer near the police barracks at Palipaka.
