Police reveal murder suspect is in custody

POLICE in East Sepik say a suspect is in police custody over the death of a 32-year-old man from a village outside Wewak town.
Police identified the deceased as Terence Rinagur, 32, from Makopin village in the Dagua local level government area.
Provincial commander Supt Albert Beli said the incident stemmed from a drunken brawl at Makopin village last Friday.
According to information reaching police the next day, the deceased and friends were drinking homebrew at the village at the time of the incident.
Beli said: “Two of the deceased’s friends approach the suspect’s family and started an argument.
“The two were chased away by the suspect’s family.
“The deceased together with friends armed with bush knives returned to the suspect’s house and tried to attack the suspect with his relatives.
“The suspect armed with a spear-gun shot the deceased below his chest.
“He was rushed to Boram hospital but died before he could be attended to.
“His body is at the morgue.
“His relatives burnt down some houses of the suspect’s family.”
Beli said the suspect was yet to be charged.
The local police boss reminded people in East Sepik to take heed of the liquor ban across the province until the end of next month.
