A MAN is hospitalised with gunshot wounds at the Port Moresby General Hospital after attacking a policeman with a kitchen knife at Laloki on New Year’s Day.
Police reports said Airo Peter, 25, of mixed Koiari and Rigo parentage, was among a group of men drinking homebrew at the Laloki Psychiatric Hospital staff quarters and behaving in a disorderly manner when police approached them.
It is alleged that while the other members of the group dispersed Peter took out the weapon and attacked Const Shane Mane.
Provincial police chief John Maru said in self-defence the officer shot the suspect on his toe with his rifle.
Maru said the suspect was recovering in hospital and would be arrested once he was discharged.
Maru also said a woman was assaulted at her home by a man in retaliation against an earlier shooting of another man.
Police reports said Noliyne George, a resident of Laloki settlement outside Port Moresby, suffered a deep cut above her right eyebrow after a Bawai Sabiga, of Goilala, punched her.
Police said the victim’s husband was a peace mediation officer and had helped police in apprehending and shooting a suspect.
Police said Sabiga fled when police arrived at the scene.
