POLICE seized 700 boxes of contraband South Pacific SP Lager beer (green) from a nightclub in Waigani Drive on Wednesday, National Capital District and Central Commander Asst Comm Anthony Wagambie Jr says.
“The contraband beer cans were seized from a 40-foot container in the club compound,” he added.
ACP Wagambi said about 700 cartons of the contraband had been sold before the seizure.
“Samples of the beer were tested by SP Brewery and were confirmed to be contraband beer,” he added.
ACP Wagambie said the club sold the contraband beer cheap.
“Last week, before Christmas, a man was sent to the nightclub to buy a six-pack beer which were sent to SP Brewery for testing.
“The beer was found to be contraband.
“Police had planned to seize the container during the Christmas weekend operations.
“However, we decided against it and waited for the right time to surprise the nightclub owners of the club.
“On Wednesday afternoon, Fox Unit 203 moved in, surprising the club workers and checked the container where cartons of SP Green beer cans were found.
“The container was taken to an undisclosed location where more tests were carried out to confirm the composition of the beer.
“Forensic tests have also confirmed the beer to be contraband,” he said.
“The tests were done in the presence of Criminal Investigations Department officers and SP Brewery security manager.
“Metropolitan Supt Gideon Ikumu will ensure a thorough investigation is carried out and action taken on the nightclub owners and operators,” he added.
