POLICE in various parts of the country are expected to commence Easter operations today and urge people to keep safe during the long weekend.
New Ireland police commander Supt Albert Beli warned motorists in the province to take precautions when driving along the highway.
Beli told The National that drivers like to hide away and drink, especially during long weekends, like Easter.
“That includes passengers and bus crews. They do not think of the safety of the passengers,” he said.
He said travellers must also take care and people living along the highway to be mindful of speeding vehicles.
Some drivers might be under the influence of alcohol and some might just be speeding up and down that might cause accidents. He gave this warning after an incident along the highway on Monday where a Land Cruiser was hit by a public bus from the back resulting in passenger being thrown out and killed.
“The driver was arrested on Sunday, the bus crew fled and gone into hiding,” Beli added.
Police are continuing investigation and also collecting information on where they can find the bus crew to have him arrested.
Meanwhile, Madang police commander Supt Robert Baim urged cooperation from everyone during the Easter period.
“Let’s all reflect our lives one more time during this period, make a change in our communities and bring changes into our own families,” Baim added.
For Northern, the police commander chief inspt Ewai Segi said liquor ban starts today and for the duration of the Easter weekend.
He also made mention of two people being wounded and one house burnt down recently in a Sorcery Accusation Related Violence at Embogo.
