POLICE shot dead a man armed with a rifle in Madang’s New Town Balasiko Market early yesterday morning.
The man was gunned down when he took aim of his rifle at the police at about 3am.
Police had responded to reports of a gang of armed men going about terrorising the people in New Town, Yabob and the Balasiko area on Saturday.
Police Minister Bryan Kramer told The National yesterday that he would be flying to Madang today to assess the law and order situation.
“I have also been told that Chief Sgt Adolf Sawar was seriously wounded by some assailants in at Tarangau barracks,” he said.
Kramer said he had requested police to deploy Lae Metro Unit and Mobile 13 to Madang tomorrow.
According to a witness, the gang members were fully armed and the public reported their fear to the police who responded and confronted the armed men.
He said Madang was no longer safe as it used to be in the past.
“The population is growing and the crime rate is also rising.
“The Madang government and the police minister who is also our MP, must seriously look into the law and order issues and act to address the situation.”
He said the police were outnumbered by the criminals and that they were trying their best to maintain law and order.

  • Policing is and should be everyone’s responsibility. Every one gets involved through reporting of suspicious people or activities and wanted people to police as police can not be everywhere where ever there people are living. Policing is a tough job in PNG and is made more tougher when the most needed resources such as fuel, vehicles and human resources are not made available through adequate allocation of budgetary support from the National Government. Police daily operations consumes more resources than any other government services as police are duty bound to provide 24 hours/ 7 days a week patrols on the streets and public places to ensure safety and security in the communities.

  • Madang seriously needs a Mobile Squad based. The once most beautiful town in the country is now considered one of the most fearful places to live. The Police Minister needs to find a lasting solution to the escalating law and order problem.

  • Madang is not really a safe place to be as it was in the past. Beautiful Madang is now becoming a place of Gang and Murderer society. As a student in Divine word university, the surrounding community seems an enemy to us the students here. The school has two gates, Guard store and Tree line. Guard store where the sepik people reside seem to be the most dangerous and fearful place between 6-7pm. Men are armed with life thretening weapons, trying to attack the students, aiming to kill them without any arguement.
Police should also investigate on this area and and make this place be a friendly and fearless atmosphere.
