POLICE shot and wounded a cult leader in Bougainville for blocking the road and flashing his buttocks at the travelling public, Bougainville police commander Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Francis Tokura says.
“The cult leader, who is also a drug addict, was exposing his buttocks at the roadblock he had set up at Aita along the Arawa-Buka Highway when police went and shot him on Saturday at about (midday),” he said.
“He escaped with serious injuries into the bush.”
“We advised medical centres and villagers in Aita, Wakunai and Tinputz to report him to us when he is seeking medical attention.”
DCP Tokura said the cult leader was wanted for impounding the Tinputz district police vehicle.
He was also wanted for allegedly running down a chief with this vehicle on Sept 14.
“He is renowned for terrorising his community in the Rau constituency, Wakunai area, Central Bougainville,” he said.
“Despite my request for the chiefs to capture and hand him to us, he is still at large.
“He is a drug-addict, armed and dangerous. I gave the responsibility to the chiefs,” DCP Tokura said.
“After all, they have never done anything to counsel him. This is not the first time he stole a police car.
“He had stolen one police car about 10 years ago and the chiefs brought it back after negotiating with him. Now they have to do it again.”
DCP Tokura said the man burnt his own house down and two other stolen vehicles on Sept 12.
He said the man still had police and Bougainville’s finance minister’s vehicles.
