Police still investigating Bumbu clash

POLICE have not confirmed whether the deaths at the squatter settlement near the Bumbu Barracks were related to two fights over land.
Metropolitan police chief Supt Nema Mondiai said at his weekly press conference yesterday that the fights started after a fight between a retired policeman’s sons and a settler.
He said the retiree had asked for a piece of land in the flood zone to resettle.
It is understood that the retired policeman’s request was turned down leading to the fight – one last Friday and another on Saturday.
The settlers said they and the police had wanted to have a peace negotiation on Saturday afternoon but at mid-day, four armed policemen walked into the settlement and shot dead two people and wounded a young man.
