THERE will be increased police presence in Port Moresby during the visits by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, according to Police Commissioner David Manning.
Wang arrives in Port Moresby tomorrow (Saturday) while Albanese will be in the country next week for ANZAC Day.
“Both these leaders have visited Papua New Guinea in the past,” Manning said.
“Ensuring the highest level of security with appropriate protocols in place is essential so that bilateral discussions can proceed without distraction.
“Central to these security arrangements is ensuring that visiting leaders and their delegations can engage in meetings, while also participating in cultural experiences that promote Papua New Guinea to the world.”
He said police would manage traffic flow when the visiting dignitaries were travelling on the road.
“Unlike many countries around the world, PNG does not face heightened current external or internal security threats relating to foreign dignitaries, but that does not mean that we can be complacent,” he said. “Every high-level visitor security operation is undertaken with the same rigor, working with close protection units of the visiting countries. Together we deliver a tight security package.
“PNG police and partner security agencies have an enviable track record of delivering a safe and secure environment so that our national leaders can receive these important guests to Papua New Guinea.”
