DRUG abuse is effecting the mental health of people aged between 15 and 25, says Chimbu police commander Chief Superintendent Jacob Singura.
“Smoking marijuana and consuming homebrew is a cheap and quick way to get intoxicated and has taken its toll on people between 15 and 25,” he said.
Singura was commenting on the uprooting of 156 more mature marijuana plants at Keyagaglkwa village in Kunabau, Kerowagi district last weekend.
He said young people were not aware of the harmful effects of smoking marijuana and drinking homebrew.
Singura said members of Police Weeding Grass operation team, who had previously raided five different locations in the area to uproot marijuana, had been educating the people on the harmful effects.
“On their return this time, (most of) the cultivators had become useful members of the village. But we still have a few growing marijuana. Police will eventually apprehend them,” he said.
“Many caught have been jailed.”
Singura thanked Operation commander detective sergeant Yatefa Welis and his team for their work.
“Many communities and their leaders are supporting them to eradicate drugs in the villages,” he said.
