Police urge residents to be responsible

JOMBA police station commander Senior Insp Kumaul Maba says self-awareness and responsibility are important for personal safety at this crucial time in Madang.
“Our manpower is concentrated on election duties, now that we are into counting and reaching the deadline for return of writs and this gap with less police presence gives opportunists the advantage to strike,” he said this week. “We need everyone’s cooperation to maintain general law and order.
“That means being responsible for your personal safety; be self-aware of your surrounding, your activities and timing.
“Yes, we are mandated to help you but we cannot be everywhere at once,” said Insp Maba.
He said Jomba police station had between 30 to 35 police personnel making up the Public Service Unit and Taskforce and with limited logistics, election duty was stretching on their capability for the polling and counting period.
He said Madang Open member Bryan Kramer had helped with a fleet of vehicles, however the Nissan Patrols were for better road conditions.
“We’re doing what we can to ensure everyone is safe.
“In fact, Madang has gotten better than previous years but everyone must still be responsible,” he said.
