Police urged to respect profession

POLICE in East Sepik, particularly young constables, have been urged to respect their profession and not use it for their own gain.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli made the comment yesterday after announcing the dismissal of a young constable and suspension of another on Monday.
He stressed that any policeman, when convicted, would be dismissed from the force.
Const Henry Avediba, Supt Beli said, assaulted a senior officer in the provincial administration last year.
“The constable was convicted and issued his dismissal notice at the Wewak Station on Monday,” he said.
“Another constable attached to the Kanduwanum police detachment was suspended on Monday after being charged with discharging a firearm in public, threatening and cruelty to animal.”
Supt Beli said the accused allegedly used a gun to kill a horse owned by a company with operations in the Kanduwanum area.
“He was drunk and behaved disorderly, threatened a female officer-in-charge of police detachment at Kanduwanum and killed a horse. He is on suspension and would be receiving 50 per cent of his wage.” Supt Beli said the constable would appear at the Wewak District Court this week.
