A JOINT operation by the police and prison officers is underway in Milne Bay to recapture escapees from the Giligili jail and reduce crime in the province.

Operation Klinim Alotau began on Saturday.

Milne Bay police commander Chief Supt Lincoln Gerari said 22 inmates who escaped from the jail at different times were still at large.

He said the joint operation would also crackdown on home-brew production, sexual assault and sea piracy which were prevalent in the province

He warned those involved, especially women who assisted in the production of home-brew and steam, that they would be dealt with seriously if they are  caught.

Gerari said people wanting to purchase yeast from the shops would need to get a permit from the police.

“In that way the police are fully monitoring the purchase and use of yeast in the province,” he said.

Police would also be on the lookout for escapees from jails in other provinces who were hiding in Alotau.

Gerari said they would conduct regular raids on nearby villages and later extend the operation to the outlying island districts of the province.

Gerari urged the general public in Milne Bay to come forward with any information that might assist police in the operations either at the Alotau police station or by calling 641 1148.
