POLICE in Morobe have warned travellers to avoid travelling at night on the Zumim section of the Okuk Highway because of flood waters.
Morobe police commander Chief Supt Jacob Singura said people especially passengers travelling to the Highlands region or Madang had to reschedule their travel.
“We have police there monitoring the situation but again police could not be always there at all times,” he said. “For such situation to happen at such times, there are tendencies that law and order issues will follow.”
He said people should think “safety first” before travelling at night.
“It is not safe to travel at night. Those coming into Lae from the Highlands region and Madang must also be mindful that when such situation happened, there are consequences. So it is advisable to reschedule their travelling to avoid inconveniences.”
Singura said the section of the road at Wanjivu and Davu villages in Markham was affected by flood waters.
Singura urged villages along the affected sections of the road to refrain from causing trouble.
Meanwhile, Works and Highways secretary David Wereh who was on the ground described it as a state of emergency.
