POLICE have warned young people to cut down on the consumption of alcohol, homebrew and marijuana which always spoil the festive season celebrations.
Western Highlands police commander Chief Supt Joe Puri said in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands, that many young people were over indulging in alcohol.
“School students have been seen drinking and smoking marijuana in public places.
“They must make some serious New Year resolutions and change their lives,” he said.
“The festive period is celebrated with alcohol that has serious repercussions which needs to be changed,” he said.
He urged elders and parents to tell students to abstain from alcohol.
He also urged police commanders to carry out their duties with pride and honesty.
“Many vehicles in the province are not roadworthy and cause road accidents,” he said. He also advised people to stop selling goods in front of shops.
He said concrete pavements were meant for shoppers to walk on, not for street sellers to do their business.
“Street sales are becoming a hub of illegal activities. Selling of items must be done in the right place.
“No more street sales will take place. Police work is not to beat you and destroy your market products.
“Let’s be responsible and sell our items at the right place so that we identify the culprits who are harassing people, grabbing mobile phones and bags and other illegal activities,” he said.
