DEPUTY Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for the Highlands (eastern end) Joseph Tondop is working to ensure peace between the Kukilga and Jika Melakamp tribes in Hagen Central, Western Highlands, after years of disputes over land.
The Kukilga tribe presented their petition to deputy ACP Tondop on Tuesday to be handed over to the provincial government, police, court and several other State agencies.
Tondop summoned the Jika Melakamp leaders to a round table meeting at Kuri Lodge last month to facilitate peace between the Kukilgas over the land dispute, namely Lglanga, which resulted in deaths on both sides.
Tondop then met with the Kukilgas on Tuesday at Kelua village.
Kagamuga urban ward three councillor Wani Barr said they wanted peace to prevail and their grievances were in the petition to be addressed by the appropriate authorities.
“The years of dispute over the land have to come to an end and peace reached; we want our grievances to be looked into,” he said.
Deputy ACP Tondop received the petitions and said he would hand them over to the authorities and people named.
