A POLICEMAN from Madang Police Station was arrested in connection with the death of a 25-year-old man last week, commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang says.
“The policeman has been charged and we are preparing the file for his court appearance,” he said. Supt Rubiang said witnesses and relatives of Elton Kudud must work closely with the police to help speed up investigations.
“I have received the relatives’ petition and have ordered an investigation,” he said.
“The policeman is still innocent until proven guilty in court.
“I am happy that he willingly showed up and was arrested and charged.”
In another incident last week, police arrested 12 suspects involved in robbing an Asian shop in town.
Supt Rubiang said according to the Weng Cheng Trading store owner, 20 men armed with offensive weapons rushed into the shop, robbed and wounded a Chinese.
“The arrests is a good sign that the others will soon be arrested,” he said.
“Police manpower in the province is shrinking and I appeal to community leaders to help police fight crime.
“Many of my men will be resigning soon.
“Some had died and I need community support now.”
