A POLICEMAN attached to Yangoru police station in East Sepik, who was suspended for 21 days, is now under investigation for disobeying lawful orders issued by his commander.
East Sepik police commander (PPC) Supt Albert Beli said the policeman was suspended last month for driving a police vehicle that was involved in an accident at Yangoru.
Supt Beli said the same policeman was seen driving a police vehicle again at Yangoru which prompted the investigation.
Rural police commander Insp James Baugen was dispatched to Yangoru and directed the policeman to report to the PPC’s office.
Supt Beli said the policeman had defied a suspension notice served on him which requires any suspended personnel not to report to his or her station during the period of suspension or be involved in any police work or use police property such as vehicles.
Supt Beli said the policeman would be investigated and penalised accordingly.
Meanwhile, Supt Beli also raised concern at the number of settlements in Wewak town which were contributing to more law and order problems in the provincial capital.
He said the provincial land board should work hard to identify the state land and also assist the police with relevant information so they could remove illegal settlers.
He also said some houses in Wewak belonging to the National Housing Corporation (NHC) were now occupied by the relatives or children of former public servants who previously lived in the houses.
He said it was a concern to see unemployed youths living in these houses and being involved in criminal activities.
“I want the town authorities and other responsible agencies such as the provincial land board and the property divisions at the provincial headquarters to do their job to identify and report to police the illegal settlers living in these houses and also those occupying land with proper land tittles within the town.”
