Polling in many places in the Southern Highlands started late after the names and numbers of candidates were found to be wrong.

Polling officials in many LLG wards were poorly-equipped and lacked materials such as pens and calculators.

Instead of starting voting as soon as the ballot boxes arrived at 8am, many started their polling at around midday.

At Sumia ward 3 in the Lower Mendi LLG, Imbonggu district, polling official Michael John said it was confusing work getting the names and numbers correct.

He said his officials quickly wrote down the correct names and candidate numbers on a chart to allow polling to start.
