A  PASTOR  against polygamy,  says many youths involved in crime came from polygamous family.
Christian Union Mission Church pastor Mathew Enge said due to limited resources, children could not attend or complete their education and girls  married while still  underaged.
He said young girls were forced to marry older men who had resources, depriving their rights to love men their age.
“They (children) know that they have poor background and without a paid job, the only means of survival is to break and enter, hold up travelling public along the national highway and involve in other petty crimes,” Enge  said.
He said men who are trying to marry more than one wife must have enough resources such as land, pigs and money to support the wives.
He said they must be fair to the all wives in terms of wealth and love.
“Many times I see wives arguing and fighting with their husbands for not visiting them or giving them anything and for paying attention to a particular wife only. This in turn creates hatred among the children too,” Enge said.
He said if a man had a piece of land and  10 sons, how would he share the land?
He said children were blessings from God and they should not be  denied their rights to do things and get education.
Hatred and jealousy between wives was likely, Enge said.
“In the past, our ancestors married many wives because the family was needed to work the land and money was not a problem to them. They needed a large family to be specialised in different areas to maintain the status of their family,” he said.
Papua New Guinea is a Christian country and the government needs to do something regarding this issue, Enge said.
He said polygamy needed to be outlawed.
