SPEAKER Job Pomat challenged MPs on both sides of the House to show him which law or provision of the Constitution dictates how he can be removed from the chair.
It followed the motion by Opposition Leader Patrick Pruaitch to have him removed.
Pomat said he had nothing against Pruaitch but needed the House to follow the right processes and laws.
“When Parliament chose me as speaker, I wanted to bring the integrity of this house to follow the laws and due processes of handling the affairs of Parliament,” he said.
“I do not have anything against you but if you can show me what the constitution and the standing order says about removing the speaker, then I will only be happy to allow the process to take place.”
Pomat said he wanted to show the public the right way and process to follow.
“I want both sides of the house to help me. We must follow the law. Show me in the constitution (or) standing order about removing the speaker and I will entertain it.”
“I can show you the constitution and standing order which talks about appointing the speaker. But there is nothing that says about removing or voting the speaker out.”
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said there was no need to create a circus in Parliament.
“I’m happy for the opposition to lodge a motion and it will be entertained and dealt with. The Speaker is appointed by the Government of the day, through the parliamentary process. If the Government has facilitated for that appointment and if it fails, he will resign,” he said.
