PORT Moresby’s Rita Flynn Courts were a hive of activity on Saturday as the Port Moresby Netball Association resumed its programmes after a two-year Coronavirus-enforced hiatus.
A tournament was held last weekend to mark the resumption of the association’s activities.
More than 50 teams registered for the tournament which tipped off on Saturday. The teams were slotted into the Under-15, U17, U21 and women’s divisions.
Association president Linda Ligo told The National that the turnout was impressive with teams coming from as far as Central’s Rigo.
“Players were eager to play,” she said. “We didn’t want to have an opening ceremony.
“The executives decided to start the tournament immediately, given the interest shown.”
The prolonged disruptions caused by pandemic had prevented the association from holding its past two seasons.
“After two years, we wanted to have the tournament,” she said.
“The interest is very high, so we will start our season as soon as we get all the affiliated teams organised.” Ligo said her association had received approval for the tournament.
“We’re grateful to the National Sports Trust Ltd, through their venue management team, for giving us this courts to hold the tournament,” she said. “Rightfully, this is the home of Port Moresby netball.”
Hence, the finals will be played this weekend.
