THE Port Moresby Rugby Football League is proud of its players for dominating the Papua New Guinea Orchids train-on squad, according to an official.
League games coordinator Meke Maino told The National last week that he was confident that most of them would make the final cut for the end-of-year Rugby League World Cup in England.
“Our players traditionally dominate the national rugby league squads,” he said.
“Vero Waula, Martha Molowia and Carol Humeu are some of our products who are regulars in the national women’s squad.”
Maino said the league had set the benchmark for the women’s game over the past five years.
He praised Waula for her leadership at Royals.
Team Red captain Waula scored two tries during the Orchids’ tri-series at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby last week.
The tri-series is part of preparations for the World Cup.
“She is always enthusiastic,” Maino said of Waula.
“She was part of the squad in the last World Cup.
“Vero has continued her form.
“If anything, she has improved.
“From my observation of the train-on squad, I don’t think it’s going to be a challenge for Waula to retain her position.
“I’m tipping her for a leadership role in the Orchids.
“She has proved herself as a leader at the club.”
Meanwhile, Maino said there are lot of players who were unlucky not to make the train-on squad. The league has 27 players in the squad.
“Although we have dominated the squad, I’m disappointed that many competitive players have missed selection due to limited spots.
“Hopefully, they’ll get another chance to make the squad.”
