THE Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) has set Friday as the tentative kick-off date for the pre-season nines tournament.
Administrator Meke Maino told The National last week that 32 teams were expected to compete in the six-day tournament, which is the curtain-raiser to the 72nd edition of the POMRFL season.
He said a women’s competition would run parallel with men’s competition.
Maino said 16 teams were expected in the women’s division.
“The pre-season nines is used as a trial for players,” he said.
“Clubs use the event to register their players for the season.
“Just like what we’ve been doing in the past six years, the male event will have 32 teams which means the 14 clubs of POMRFL will field two sides each and four teams will be invitational sides from Central.
“The women’s division will have a team each from the POMRFL clubs and two teams from outside the National Capital District.”
Maino said the entry fee was affordable for all teams.
He encouraged all teams to pay before the kick-off date.
“The entry fee is K400 for one male team,” he said.
“A club with two teams will pay K700.
“Female teams from POMRFL will pay K300 while the two female invitational teams will pay K500 each.
“The fees are the same from 2019.”
Maino said the POMRFL board had agreed to maintain the fees so that it was reasonable for all teams and they could pay on time for the competition to start.
