HUMAN resources support from China for the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has been tremendous, the hospital’s chief executive says.
“We can put our kina value to medicines and equipment but the support PMGH receives from the medical team from China every year is invaluable,” Dr Umesh Gupta said.
Gupta spoke at the presentation ceremony of urology medicine and equipment worth K2.3 million from the Chinese government last week.
Chinese acting ambassador Yao Min thanked the hospital for the support given to the Chinese volunteer teams over the years.
Min said medicine and equipment were important to build the urology division of the hospital.
“These will bring up the level of the hospital and will relieve the suffering,” he said.
“In the long term, we hope the hospital could find a suitable place to build a urology centre that we will continue to support.”
Min said they were looking forward to further government cooperation and to fund more common projects to benefit the local community.
The Chinese team has imparted skills and knowledge to the surgeons and registrars, said urologist-chief surgeon and chairman of the Medical Board of PNG Dr Osbourne Liko.
“We need a bigger centre to house the equipment and fully utilise them that our people can benefit from,” Liko said.
“I am proud to say that one paediatric surgeon and a urologist will be going to China next month for six months of training.”
Liko thanked the medical team from China and the government of China for the support they have given so far.
