Port Moresby netball planing to host games

THE Port Moresby Netball Association (POMNA) is planning a mini super league for next month or early December, depending on the Coronavirus (Covid-19) measures issued by the National Control Centre.
President Linda Ligo said her association had competed against the Papua New Guinea Pepes in a similar league at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby recently.
She said it had prompted interest to host a league of their own.
Ligo told The National last week that they were hopeful that the Covid-19 situation would improve so association could run the league.
“The recent league was a great exposure for our young and upcoming players,” she said.
“We fielded three teams in the league, but only one made it to the finals against Pepes Two and lost by a point.
“They all enjoyed the game, knowing that netball was the only code affected badly by the pandemic.
“So we are now anticipating to host our own league, however, we are mindful of the Covid-19 delta variant that’s spreading.
“But we are hopeful of tipping off our league in November, or the first week of December, if all goes well.”
Meanwhile, Ligo said she was hopeful that her players would be selected into the Pepes squad from their performance during the league, which ended on the eve of Independence.
“We’re the biggest association in the country and most of the Pepes squad members are our players, so I am hopeful that my upcoming players will be considered for the national squad,” she said.
Due the Covid-19 restrictions, the national championships have been cancelled, however, the recent league was used to assess players for international duties from next year.
