NATIONAL Soccer League club Port Moresby Strikers have taken a stand in getting its players and management vaccinated against the Coronavirus (Covid-19) as part of their community obligation.
Strikers manager Gordon Manub told The National last week that this was an individual decision as seven club members, including five players and head coach Philemon Tamari, received their jabs.
“We are duty-bound to be responsible to ourselves and to our people during this pandemic to be safe,” he said.
“This will also protect others as we act responsibly during this time to proactively take heed of the vaccination message and get jabbed.
“The decision for vaccination was made by myself and each of the players who received the vaccine.
“We have taken this step to encourage all our players, families, friends and footballers to take the responsible action to receive the vaccine as part of our community obligation to our sport and association.”
Manub said while the league was temporarily cancelled due to Covid-19 measures, clubs needed to take the right approach in keeping the community safe.
“We know it’s an individual decision and we are not forcing anyone to receive the vaccine,” he said.
“But we believe it is the right thing to do after each person considers the information provided by health authorities.
“Our players are still getting vaccinated and, to date, we have a total of five players, including our head coach and myself, who have been vaccinated.
“We look forward to this number increasing during this period.”
