Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League keen to complete season

PORT Moresby Suburban Rugby League is eager to complete its season despite a campaign without sponsors and delayed by the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to an official.
League president James Paul told The National yesterday that the competition was into week three of its finals.
But he said financial difficulties were a concern with the grand finals likely to be postponed to next month.
The league confirmed a total of 18 clubs this year with majority of them from Moresby North-West.
“We haven’t received any sponsorship for this season because Covid-19 has affected businesses everywhere and it has been hard to put together matches all year,” Paul said.
“We have six women’s teams and 18 Under-20 and A-grade sides each.
“We had to stop matches for the whole of October.
“We had to re-send our back-to-sports protocols to the National Control Centre which took a few more weeks before we could actually resume.”
Paul said there was a possibility of the finals being completed next month to help teams and competition administration prepare well.
“If we can’t confirm any support to host the grand finals by the end of this week then we will have to move the finals to the first two weeks of next month,” he said. After receiving clearance, we decided to cut the regular season short and jump right into the finals, given that we were close to Christmas.
“At this stage, we’ve managed to complete three weeks of finals for all our divisions, but we still have two disputed matches to play out before we confirm the grand finalists.”
