THERE is so much tourism potential in Papua New Guinea which should be developed and promoted, says a visiting Malaysian government minister.
Malaysia’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Minister for Youths, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said in Port Moresby yesterday that he hoped to see more collaboration between the two countries on culture, tourism and education.
He was at the Vision City Mega Mall with the Sarawak state tourism promotion dancers.
“PNG is a melting pot of cultures,” he said.
“And now tourism is about culture, it is about lifestyle.
“So if you are able to police that, and promote it to the world, this is a melting pot of culture, so your people can see the diverse ethnicity, the differences in lifestyle and dancing and way of life.
“This is very rich. It is up to the PNG Government to develop (tourism) and showcase it to the world.
“I thought that Sarawak is already full of ethnicity in the whole of Malaysia.
“We have 31 different ethnic groups.
“But when I came here to PNG, you have got more than 800. That is so much different from what we have.”
Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia, stretching 800km along the northwest coast of Borneo, the world’s third largest island.
It has a population of 2,636,000.
