PAPUA New Guinea Power mechanical and electrical engineers are working closely with a consultant from Nippon Koei (Japan) to refurbish two hydro generators at Rouna 1 and 3 hydro power stations at Sogeri, Central.
Rouna 1’s unit 4 and Rouna 3’s unit 2 are undergoing major refits under the precise guidance of Tadasi Sasaki from Nippon Koei, to maximise their output to optimum levels and extend the life of the machines.
Rouna hydro power station manager Esau Noel said works were been carried out including realignment of turbines, installation of new parts and general maintenance.
“The project is expected to be completed by the end of December, increasing generation output from the station to enhance capacity to meet the Port Moresby system demands for electricity.
“It is very expensive to build new power stations so the most cost effective way and thing to do is to basically repair the existing machines.
“We need to maintain their effectiveness so that they continue to operate efficiently,” Noel said, adding the city was expanding, businesses and the population was growing and it needed an increase in production of electricity.
We are doing all we can and we assure the public that we will fix the problem.
“There are constant power blackouts and surges in the city because when we are fixing the machines, we shut down certain parts of the city. We do that to different parts of the city where power shedding takes place.
“This is done in order to make our work more effective and quicker.
“We are constantly briefing our head office on the progress here in the power stations so that they are aware.
“Hydro power stations have a very long life and it is important to maintain them.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to get things back in order soon,” Noel said.
