Power firm donates books to schools in project areas

NUIPOWER Ltd through its book-drive programme will donate reading books to five elementary schools in the project communities at Papa, Porebada, Boera, Lealea and Kido in Central.
Chief executive officer Michael Uiari said 5,000 books had been purchased from Buk Bilong Pikinini and the five schools would be receiving 1,000 each.
New Papa Junior High school was the first school to receive 1,000 books yesterday.
NuiPower is a company which currently generates electricity to power up Port Moresby using liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Uiari said reading was an important part of development for a child and urged students to take care of the books and make sure to read them. He said arrangements for the other schools were underway and the team would be visiting those schools soon.
NuiPower external affairs manager Wellington Bellawa said NuiPower had a community investment programme, one of which was a the book drive.
They also supported sports, churches and women groups.
Bellawa said for this year, they were supporting education through book drive as they believed reading was a big component of any education.
“We are not ExxonMobil, we are a small company, therefore, our intervention with community is grassroots, low cost and we work with the community,” he said.
“The community tells us what they want and we assist where we can, so that is the aim of the programme.”
School head teacher Doriga Kila said the school was recently elevated to a junior high school and they were enrolling grade nine students and the contribution would help in the learning and development of children.
“We thank NiuPower for this important support,” Kila said.
