SOUTHERN Highlands Governor William Powi says the Government must address the rise of counterfeit products entering the country.
He told Parliament last week that quality and standards was what businesses needed to promote.
“We are having second hand cars and counterfeit products and the bilums and meri-blouse, into our settlements and communities,” he said.
“This is not a dumping ground for used and counterfeit products.
“It is a national shame.
“I think we as leaders going forward must have PNG standards and quality.
“It is an eyesore, I want us leaders to think about it.
“Quality and standards must become a benchmark for us going forward in the next 50 years.
“We must not play around with quality and standards, we must have PNG standards in all aspects of life.
“The Government must have legislative framework with benchmarks that provide the future progress for us as people and country going forward, it must become an important matter for successive government.
“Low quality and standards in every aspect of life in PNG is impinging on the intelligence of PNG so I want the country to have its quality and standards as comparable with other countries in the world.”

  • Its a concern and needs to be addressed.
Also look at foreigners operating in the country. Any foreigner wanting to do business in the country should have an operation that is worth more than a million kina. NOT trade stores in the rural communities.
Asians are now operating trade stores in the rural centers of PNG. Appropriate authorities should look in to this and address.
