Pride, Gurias planning Somare Memorial match

PLANS are underway to start an annual Somare Memorial match between Sepik Pride and Rabaul Gurias by 2022, says Pride interim project manager Bradley Simon.
Simon told The National yesterday that this was the Pride’s contribution towards the Somare family to continue the legacy of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare through rugby league. He said dialogues between the Pride and Gurias had been successful to kick off the initiative, but they were yet consult the family of Sir Michael for their approval.
“As a former player, I think it’s fitting to have an annual match between the Gurias and Pride to commemorate the Grand Chief,” Simon said. “The reason we chose the Gurias is because Sir Michael was born in East New Britain and lived there before he became the governor for East Sepik.
“The proposed date for the match is the month or week the Grand Chief was buried or the day or week of his passing, but that is yet to be finalised.”
