POLICE in Enga say they have arrested two priests and two women, one the wife of a policeman and another a grade nine student, for allegedly drinking alcohol in a vehicle.
Provincial police commander acting Supt Epenes Nili yesterday said the four had been charged with drinking and being disorderly in public, and drinking in a moving vehicle. They are expected to appear today at the Wabag District Court.
Nili alleged the four were seen drinking around in Wabag town on Thursday afternoon in a vehicle.
Police on the pre-Christmas and New Year operation noticed what they were doing and arrested them.
He said they found empty beer bottles and 12 full ones inside the vehicle.
“I will not entertain any laymen, public servants, prominent leaders or business men or women in the province breaking the law,” he said.
“We imposed a K4,000 bail each but since they did not have the money, they are locked up in the cell.”
Nili claimed that these two priests were supposed to attend the ordination of a deacon at the Sari Catholic church in Wabag town.
He said leaders should be the ones preaching to the people about behaving themselves and respecting the law.
“My Christmas and New Year message last week in the media was very clear – no drinking of alcohol in public places, beside the road, in a moving vehicle or do not try to smuggle liquor into the province,” he said.
He said his officers were working day and night to ensure peace and order in the province during the festive period.
