A PRIMARY school in Morobe recently had three projects totalling K1.3 million launched by the local MP.
Hobu Primary School in Nawaeb, a school with 500 students and 15 teachers, now has a new two-in-one grade eight classroom building, one new staff house and access to clean water from the community water supply built by the district development authority (DDA) and partners.
Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge said the classroom building which was the first in the district to also cater for people with disabilities and a teacher’s house were funded by the DDA with K500,000 and K100,000.
He said the water supply into the community, which ran for at least 10km from the water source, was co-funded by the Government through the Department of National Planning and Monitoring with K500,000 while the DDA contributed K200,000.
Wenge also acknowledged other notable projects, including toilets throughout the district, two of which were at Hobu primary and set up by World Vision and the United Nations Children’s Fund under its water, sanitation and hygiene programme.
He said education and health would continue to be his priority areas and urged the community to take ownership of the infrastructure.
Hobu Primary School head teacher Nick Mayang said the school needed more classrooms to cater for the increase in the number of students over the last few years.
“In 2016, the population of the school was 180 and has grown to about 540 students now,” Mayang said.
“Our board and teachers have been carrying on our own projects through our school learning improvement plan funds to cater for the increase and we appreciate this government assistance.”
Mayang said the new staff house brought the total of staff houses to 10.
