Prisoner on the run after damaging jail vehicle

POLICE in Manus are looking for a man who damaged a vehicle belonging to the Correctional Services jail in Lorengau.
Provincial police commander chief inspector David Yapu said the man, Kelly Kuwoh, was on remand and due appear at the national court on a charge of armed robbery when he escaped on April 11.
Kuwoh was under the influence of alcohol and used a wheel spanner to damage the windscreen of the vehicle, said Yapu.
He said guards fired a warning shot but Kuwoh escaped and disappeared into the darkness.
Yapu warned Kuwoh to surrender before police came out in full force to look for him.
He said this was a serious matter .
“Prisoners being drunk in the prison compound is another concern and I would like to request an internal investigation by the CS
higher authorities into this matter,” he said.
Yapu said another prisoner had been drunk and caused nuisance at the CS compound and was taken to the police cells and locked up.
The prisoner swore and threatened Yapu and other officers when they went to investigate why he was making so much noise.
