Prisoners can be used to tackle drug-related problems: Waipo

PRISONERS convicted of drug-related offences can be used in campaigns against drug and alcohol abuse, says Correctional Services Commissioner Michael Waipo.
Waipo said the problem affected individuals, families, districts, provinces and the nation and needed an effective approach to tackle it.
A group of 20 prisoners at Bomana completed a three-week programme on character development and drug education organised by the National Narcotics Bureau, National Capital District Commission and the Laloki Psychiatric Hospital.
“People who have been involved in drug and alcohol abuse and now in prison would have a good understanding on how to approach people and address the issue,” Waipo said.
Bomana prison commanding officer Kidi Keko said the aim of the training was to educate the inmates to raise awareness among their families and communities after serving their terms.
