PRISONERS are Papua New Guinea citizens and need to be registered in the Civil Registry, Bomana prison commanding officer Kiddy Keko, pictured, says.
He told The National that the prison had organised with Civil Registry to register the identification of the prisoners which started last Wednesday.
“The management expresses its appreciation to the acting director general for accepting our request and sending a team over to process the NIDs for our prisoners, the staff and, of course, the community here at Bomana,” Keko said
“We are anticipating the entire prison population of more than 600 to get registered.”
One of the prisoners expressed his gratitude to the Bomana prison management for allowing them to register.
“Being in prison does not divide us from this country, or it does not take away our pride and nationality as Papua New Guineans,” he said.
Keko said registrations would continue this week.
