INMATES of Buimo Prison in Lae took part in the 43rd Independence anniversary celebrations on Friday.
They sang and danced to entertain those who turned up.
Armsec Limited and Seeto Kui (Holdings) Limited each donated three cakes and food. Armsec also gave two cows.
Lae MP John Rosso donated four colour TV sets and food to the prisoners.
Assistant Commissioner Northern regional command Superintendent Henry Warwick told of the day in 1975 when the Australian flag was lowered for the last time on Morobe soil.
“I was at the Tutumang Haus. We fired a 21-gun salute. When the Australian flag came down, many people in Morobe wept. I do not know what they were crying for. But that was how PNG gained its independence,” Warwick said.
He urged the inmates to appreciate the help from the private sector, Government, churches and civil societies. “When we escape from prison, we paint a bad image of ourselves and these people will think twice before trying to help us,” Warwick said.
