POLICE in East Sepik will investigate the use of funds allocated to the local level government (LLGs) in the province as much of the money has not been used for its intended purpose such as projects.
East Sepik police commander Albert Beli said he had spoken with Governor Allan Bird and would organise for local fraud police in tandem with some from the National Fraud office in Port Moresby to form an audit team to carry out the investigation.
He said many funds had been misused and Bird wanted an investigation carried out and those responsible brought to justice before he allocated money to the province’s LLGs next year. Beli said the police and the governor’s office would set up a provincial accounts committee to be supported by fraud officers that would look into the expenditure of LLG funds.
“I want the public to assist the police with whatever information they have on how the Local Level Government Service Improvement Programme (LLGSIP) funds were used in their respective LLGs.
“Governor Bird said he would allocate funds until we clean up the mess and account for money given already so its very important for the public to assist with information,” Beli said.
He said the provincial government would fund the investigation.
