THE Beyond the Goalposts Programme held its second phase of exercises at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Australian NRL referee education provider Steve Hamilton, who facilitated the training for the young referees, was thrilled to see the young men progressing well in their officiating capacity.
“I was impressed to see the young referees asking questions, having good game sense and making the right calls during the sessions,” Hamilton said.
The second module is an overview of the first. The referees will undergo 10 units via three modules and a final assessment to obtain accreditation equivalent to the Australian NRL Level 1 accreditation.
A total of 23 participants took part in the second phase and participants are high school students (Grade 7-9) and volunteers.
The level one referee course will teach fundamentals of the referee’s involvement in the modified game where participants will gain skills and knowledge needed to be a fair and effective referees.
The programme is part of NRL’s capacity building and development pathway for referees under the PNG Rugby Football League.
