TEAM Papua New Guinea ended its Hero programme with the presentation of certificates to participants in Port Moresby on Friday.
Eighteen men and 13 women across 17 sports attended the week-long programme which focused on Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee’s (PNGOC) core values of honesty, excellence, respect and openness.
PNGOC said in a statement that it saw Team PNG athletes as role models in influencing constructive changes in communities and representing the positive values associated with sports.
“PNGOC also recognises the importance of empowering our athletes with the necessary skills and knowledge to allow them to become a Hero,” it said.
The programme provides athletes with capacity development and helps them secure employment and educational opportunities.
The training focused on various aspects related to the Olympic and sporting movements; and life skills development focusing on the athletes’ sporting and professional development, and issues facing sports.
Hero participants take the lead within PNGOC to run sports for development programmes, marketing and other activities.
