THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea’s (BFPNG) Hoops for Health is a programme to introduce the sport to youths but it can also help reignite the passion for others.
Participant Joanne Naime, who works for the National Airports Corporation, rediscovered her love for basketball through the programme.
“Basketball is a hobby of mine,” she said.
“I love playing it but there’s not much of a chance for us to play because of availability and time. I love playing basketball so when I found out about this programme, I made it my business to seek it out and join the community in playing the game.”
BFPNG chief executive Nick Daroa invited the public to join their programmes and mentioned that he was proud of the sport’s inclusivity.
“Whenever we go out and run our programmes, we target youths so we can start them while they’re young,” he said.
“But we don’t turn our backs on people who want to learn the game or just play with us. Basketball is fun and we want everyone to feel the same way we feel when we run our programmes.”
Naime praised the health messages delivered under the programmes.
“It’s a great initiative by BFPNG to stress the importance of fitness among youths,” she said. – fibaoceania
