A LOCALLY-owned coffee project in Watut LLG, Bulolo, Morobe, aims to grow 500,000 trees over the next five years.
Ammehiya Coffee Project currently has 140,000 coffee trees with farmers working hard to reach their target. It is an initiative of the local people of Ammehiya, who are members of Langema, one of the largest in the district.
Coordinator and landowner Bonny Namson said the initiative started back in 2012.
“We have only worked on a third of the land, with the rest still yet to be developed to reach our target number of trees. I have spent so much from my own pocket to see that this impact project gets off the ground,” hge said. “We are exhausted in meeting project materials and equipments like pulpers, canvas, working gear, transportation and others.”
Namson called on the Morobe government, Coffee Industry Corporation, Bulolo district, Watut LLG and others to help with funding and technical expertise to move the project forward.
