Promote investment: Parkop

PORT Moresby and Shenzhen City in China are now sister-cities.
It follows the signing of an agreement last month in Shenzhen between National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and Mayor of Shenzhen City Xu Qin.
It is to enhance collaboration in economic, technical, educational, social and cultural affairs.
The agreement involved the collaboration between private and public companies to invest in the development of Paga Hill and other similar impact projects in Port Moresby as a new model for the sister-city collaboration.
As part of the agreement, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government offered to build a primary and secondary school in Port Moresby and upgrade the Lareva Market at Hohola into a modern market with quality facilities for vendors and patrons.
“This immediate offer of assistance to Port Moresby would exceed K100 million and I am confident we will begin to see the benefits soon,” Parkop said.
A technical agreement for cooperation between the two municipal governments and cities was also signed between the Deputy City Manager (Community and Social Services) Honk Kiap and his counterpart from the Shenzhen Municipal Government.
“While Port Moresby has sister-city relationships with a number of other cities in the regions and in the world, I see this agreement different as it will be driven initially by the private sector in the two cities and simultaneously with the public sector. This is what makes this new relationship different to other sister-city relationship in the past.” Parkop said. Shenzhen is a Chinese success story on all fronts. It was built in the last 35 years from a small fishing village. It is now a major economic pillar for China hosting the third largest sea port in the world and having the third biggest GDP in China. To enhance this collaboration, Port Moresby will open an office in Shenzhen to promote investment and trade both ways and Shenzhen will likewise open an office in Port Moresby.
